Wavre is a French-speaking city in the centre of Belgium, by the river Dyle, and the capital of the province of Walloon Brabant in Wallonia. In 2020, this municipality located on the main road between Brussels and Namur came 13th for population size in the Wallonia region and 61st across the whole of Belgium, with 34,396 inhabitants. Wavre is also known as ‘the City of the Maca,’ in reference to the statue of a young boy climbing a wall outside the city hall (by the sculptor Jean Godard (1921-1967), dating back to 1962). Its inhabitants are ‘Wavriens’ (for men) or ‘Wavriennes' (for women). By association, the Wavriens are also known as Macas.
Wavre is served by different public transport lines. For train travel, Wavre’s railway station is located on line 139 between Louvain and Ottignies. The municipality of Wavre also has a bus station. By car, Wavre is around 30 minutes from Brussels and 10 minutes from Louvain-La-Neuve.
